The world of seven-inch tablets did not exactly shake with Apple's entry into this market, but most likely this event will soon change it. Analysts are trumpeting with might and main the prospects of the segment, foreshadowing its rapid growth. The eternal rival of the apple company, Samsung, mastered the segment much earlier and released more than one seven-inch tablet into the world. Unlike last year's Galaxy Tab 7.7, the hero of today's review, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, is neither a flagship nor a prestigious model. Nevertheless, its characteristics are worthy of respect and make it worth a closer look for those who need an inexpensive tablet that is convenient to carry with them every day.

Design and connectors

Describing the design of tablets in general is not easy, but the design of Samsung tablets is doubly so. They are too similar to each other. The pictures, in principle, show that this is the child of its eminent Korean parent, but, unlike the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, the body here is traditionally plastic, quite slippery to the touch. The back, fortunately, is not glossy. Several barely noticeable scratches appeared on it even before my intervention in his life. True, I don’t know how much time the sample I received for testing spent in operation.

From iPhone 4s

The thickness of 10 and a half millimeters does not allow the tablet to be considered very thin, but it still allows it to fit into the pockets of jackets or jeans (not just any, though). Although the book-shaped device weighing 342 grams, in my opinion, is more convenient to carry in a bag than in clothes. But this weight allows you to hold the tablet with one hand for quite a long time.

The top end contains an audio jack, the bottom - a pair of speakers and a charging socket.

On the right are the power and volume control buttons, and on the left side there is a place for a microSD card reader covered with a flap.

It will clearly be appreciated by those who are looking for an inexpensive tablet with a well-known name on the case and at the same time plan to frequently transfer data (the last phrase contains warm greetings to the Galaxy Nexus and its biggest drawback, the lack of memory expandability). The plastic of the case is quite simple, but durable: the tablet is assembled well, the parts are adjusted to each other, and there are no creaks when pressed.

Screen

1024x600 pixels is not God knows what resolution by today's standards, but it is much more important that the tablet does not have a TN matrix, but a PLS one. Let me remind you that PLS is a technology similar to IPS, only produced by Samsung. It’s similar in that it provides good viewing angles, no matter how you look at it, everything will be visible. However, in terms of clarity, brightness and contrast, it seemed to me that this screen is inferior to its mid-class IPS colleagues. The colors are not calm in an oriental way, somewhat pale, which, for me personally, is preferable to the flashy SuperAmoled colors.

On a sunny day, the screen is difficult to see, but the letters can be distinguished. But it’s better to set the brightness to maximum, and in general it’s better to adjust it manually: auto-correction does not always work correctly. It is convenient to read or watch a movie indoors using a tablet. The Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 reacts to touch quite sensitively and understands up to 10 fingers at the same time.

Comparison with iPhone 4S screen

Performance, functionality and software

The tablet has Android 4.0.4 with the proprietary TouchWiz shell, in a version similar to the Samsung Galaxy SIII. For details, we refer the reader to that review, but here we will briefly mention that this interface is quite close to pure Android, there is a convenient division into applications and widgets. There is a built-in file manager, a simple but convenient “program tracking” widget, which allows you to quickly deal with the eternal problem of Android - applications hanging in memory forever.

I also liked the cute clock widgets with an alarm clock, a program for writing notes (though only via the keyboard, without the ability to draw), a rather convenient S Planner organizer and, as always, not the most convenient browser.

The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 also has a “Contacts” item, which pulls up information from your Google account, and also, in the case of the 3G model, from the phone book.

The control keys here are on-screen, and in addition to the three standards, a button has also been added for quickly taking screenshots. This is convenient, but is it really necessary for the vast majority of users?

The multimedia capabilities of the tablet are quite good. Firstly, as always with Samsung devices, the Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 supports a variety of audio and video formats. So, you can listen to MP3, OGG, AAC, AMR-NB, WB, WMA, WAV, MID, IMY and, fortunately, FLAC. The sound from the speakers is of medium volume (at maximum you can watch a movie in a quiet place) and average level. Of course, not a music lover, but it will do for a tablet. In headphones it immediately becomes softer and more pleasant, quite clear, at about 80% volume, then wheezes slightly. True, the sound is flat, there is no special bass here.

A fairly progressive hardware platform - and the Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 chipset with the ARMv7 instruction set and the PowerVR SGX540 graphics accelerator is installed here - has an IVA3 multimedia accelerator, with the help of which video in 1080p resolution is encoded and decoded in hardware. I launched a FullHD video in MKV, it played generally without problems, although a couple of times the picture began to slow down. Overall, TouchWiz, although nice, is not the fastest shell. Sometimes the smooth transition between pages was lost, although I did not observe any critical “brakes.” The tablet demonstrates normal average results both in benchmarks and in games. Let's say Dead Trigger is quite possible to play. For toys and everything else in the device, 400 MB of RAM is available out of a total of 1 GB, and the storage capacity in our case was only 8 GB. However, there is an option with 16 GB, and fortunately there is a slot for microSD here.

The tablet found WiFi points quickly enough and did not lose them, but the GPS is not always stable: without the Internet, when driving in a car, it sometimes takes a very long time to find a location.

Camera

The main camera has a resolution of 3 MP, which, of course, is quite a bit. But its biggest problem is not the number of megapixels, but simple optics, lack of autofocus and flash. More or less decent pictures are obtained only with ideal lighting. However, tablets, even seven-inch ones, are not the most convenient tools for capturing the world around us. However, if really necessary, poor pictures can be taken, as well as videos in a resolution of 1280x720 pixels at 30 frames per second. The front camera works for video calls. Tested: it works, you can recognize a person, however, if you are not in the twilight of a rainy day.

Autonomy

Under normal load (Internet, movies, music, reading - periodically throughout the day) with screen brightness varying from 70 to 100%, the tablet lasts about 2.5-3 days without recharging. The FullHD video with maximum screen brightness and sound volume, and WiFi turned on, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 played for 4 hours 23 minutes. Decent performance, although somewhat behind the Nexus 7.

Competitors

Obviously, in the budget segment of 7-inch tablets, Nexus 7 is one of the main leaders, and it is the main competitor of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. At the same price, Google/ASUS Nexus 7 has a higher resolution screen and is somewhat faster. However, the lack of support for external media is a reason for many not to buy the brainchild of Google and ASUS, as is sometimes the lack of a 3G module. We received a version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 without 3G for review, which costs about $200, while the 3G module adds another hundred to it. However, we have already released this very module, let’s see how quickly and at what price it will be available to us. Also worth mentioning is the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, which is slightly heavier and larger than standard 7-inch tablets, but has a 16:10 aspect ratio screen, which may be more acceptable for some users than the generally accepted 16:9 standard.

Bottom line

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 may be a good choice for those who are looking for a fairly powerful inexpensive 7-inch tablet with a decent screen for surfing, reading and watching videos, for those who need GPS and memory cards, as well as a 3G module. 4 reasons to buy Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0:

  • Price/quality ratio
  • Good performance in games and videos
  • Supports a wide range of audio and video formats
  • Good build

2 reasons not to buy Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0:

  • Slowdown in the TouchWiz shell.
  • Weak camera.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 review: white collar among tablets

And since almost all the leading mobile manufacturers decided to try a new direction, it goes without saying that the competition in this segment is fierce. Even at the Android platform level, the competitive stakes are extremely high. Many manufacturers have interesting models that can attract buyers. But just as in the “wild west” the revolver was the final argument, so in the spring-summer 2012 season the price plays this role. This argument will make any hothead come to his senses.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

If the changes in the characteristics of the new generation of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 family are more of an evolutionary indicator, then the cost of the device is precisely a real revolution from Samsung. As you remember, the first Tab entered the market at a very inhumane price, which naturally scared off many potential buyers. The cost exceeded even the price tag that was current at that time. Now the version without a 3G module costs 14,990, and with a cellular modem – 19,990. This is impressive! This is explained by the fact that the first version of the tablet was a “touchstone”; a lot of engineering resources were spent on the development and refinement of the software and shell. But when the devices began to be sold in significant volumes, the price changed in a direction that was pleasant for us, the buyers.

Dimensions are 256.6 x 175.3 x 9.7mm. Weight is only 588 grams, which is very little for such a modern and advanced device. And although it is not made of aluminum, it weighs almost 75 grams less than its direct competitor. For some, excuse the pun, this may be a significant factor.

The back of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is no longer made of a smooth material, but of a rough material that is pleasant to the touch. This is convenient, especially when gripping with one hand. In addition, the plastic is very resistant to scratches and dirt, so with sufficiently careful handling, a cover may not even be needed. The color of the back is not just gray, but rather imitates metal. And although the manufacturer’s website presents a white model, we tested a copy with a black frame and gray back. Along the edges of the black frame there is a gray outline with speaker grilles. It looks very attractive, however, we saw a similar design in the (tablet with stylus) that was presented in Barcelona at the exhibition this year.

The screen quality of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is more than decent

The resolution is, usual for such a diagonal, 1280 x 800. It is not clear whether at this moment in the development of technology it is worth striving for higher figures? Most applications work at this resolution. 720 p video is played, as you understand, pixel by pixel and even with a margin. Playing even larger movies on a tablet may not always be logical, given that such files weigh more and load the processor so much that it becomes critical for overall performance.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 matrix is made using PLS TFT technology. This is, of course, not AMOLED or IPS. But you can’t really find fault with the viewing angles. Everything is on the level. However, in the sun the screen becomes very blind. And the glossy glass surface can act as a mirror. Therefore, the brightness has to be turned up a little. In principle, automatic brightness adjustment copes well with its tasks. But because of the resolution, I want to sharpen the picture a little and make it a little more contrasty. Since we don’t have such settings, we can only compensate for this by increasing the brightness. This is not always convenient, especially when you are in a darkened room.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1: the strongest player in the Android tablet market

Performance is driven by a dual-core TI OMAP 4430 1 GHz processor (ARM Cortex A9), which operates at 1 GHz. The modern PowerVR SGX 540 chip is responsible for graphics operation in both two- and three-dimensional modes. RAM is 1 GB. The tablet has a fairly capacious 7000 mAh battery. So the filling is very modern.

We would call the performance normal, but there is no reserve. If more resource-hungry applications appear in the near future, then, most likely, we will encounter constant slowdowns.

In principle, we managed to run video with a resolution of 1080p, which was undoubtedly redundant, given the display resolution. It was clear that although the device was coping, it was operating at the upper limit of its capabilities; in especially dynamic scenes, frame drops could be noticed. At a resolution of 720p, we no longer encountered any stuttering. So the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 can become a full-fledged video companion for travel and short trips.

Wireless interfaces include Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct for pairing with other devices, Bluetooth version 3, 3G (HSPA + 21 Mbit/s, HSUPA 5.76 Mbit/s) and voice communication on the GSM network. A-GPS and GLONASS navigation is supported.

The main menu of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 looks familiar

Considering the presence of a SIM card slot and the tablet’s ability to act as a 3G-WiFi router, the role of an Internet access point can be assigned to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

Still, it has a 7000 mAh battery, more than any smartphone. On average, when using the device intensively, it required charging after 6 hours; in a more gentle mode, the figures increased to 7 hours.

The device already comes with Android Ice Cream Sandwih operating system version 4.0.3. As you know, all navigation there is arranged through “soft” keys; there are no hardware buttons other than power and volume control.

On the top edge there is a slot for a microSD memory card (supports up to 32 Gb inclusive), a standard 3.5 mm jack for a stereo headset and a slot for a SIM card. At the bottom is a proprietary power/charging/data connector. As we have already said, the speakers are located on the front of the tablet. Geometrically, they look very large, but in terms of sound quality, it seems that they are even slightly inferior to the audio solution installed on its seven-inch brother. The sound quality is not great, but it is quite good as a speakerphone and speaker for dubbing games and movies (series) with a lot of dialogue. At maximum volume, the speakers definitely choke. So, it’s worth using a headset or external speakers in order to arrange a disco or group video viewing.

The main part of the interfaces is on the top edge of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

As we said, the device is equipped with a SIM card slot. But in this case, the GSM module supports not only data transmission. can also act as a telephone.

The conversation can be carried out through the headset. And also, we mentioned that the tablet has a perfectly implemented speaker system to work as a public address system. We really liked the device in this mode. The sound is clear and loud. If necessary, you can use a wired or Bluetooth headset. The interface of the phone application is no different from that installed in top Samsung smartphones. The Phone application icon is also located in the TouchWiz panel.

Again, TouchWiz is a great add-on to the Android operating system. Engineers spent a lot of time correcting noticeable shortcomings of the operating system authors from Google. For example, on the main menu line, next to the standard “Home”, “Back” and “Options” buttons, there is a button for taking instant screenshots. Believe me, it's very convenient!

The battery capacity of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is amazing

Also, in the tray there are several applications that may be needed at any moment. These are note-taking programs, a calculator, a player control utility, a calendar, a task manager, and a world clock. All these programs are called on top of the working windows, and they are pleasant to work with. For example, notes can be taken in the form of small drawings, or by typing passages of text. Using the task manager, you can close all background running programs with just one click. This really makes the tablet easier to use, considering how many programs and utilities a modern user might need.

Previously, the reason for numerous complaints was the lack of application programs and interesting games. Especially considering the number of programs, user-friendly interface and billing in the App Store. However, it is clear that the Android platform and the Android Play app store are evolving. And more and more leading software developers are paying close attention to owners of devices with a cheerful green Android robot running in their bellies. Now, decent gaming titles have finally appeared on the Android platform, the lack of which we talked about earlier. The situation is repeated with game consoles. There, too, decent games appear a year and a half after the launch of the console. Now users have access to almost all the interesting games available for Apple tablets.

Basic programs and applications for running services that are necessary in everyday work (we are talking about average tasks) are almost always presented in several versions. What's nice is that many useful applications are free.

The rear camera of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 ceases to be a mandatory but useless trick

So far, Market still cannot boast of ease of navigation and categorization of applications. The wide coverage of platforms also has an impact. Thus, an application written for a smartphone will look very bad on a tablet, or even not launch at all or close without recording the results.

It should be immediately noted that from a performance point of view, Samsung tablets have a significant advantage - they come with a set of useful programs. Initially, the device comes pre-installed with the Touch Wiz add-on, which we already wrote about. And also - a convenient video editor, photo editor, which launches immediately after taking a screenshot: you can cut and send the necessary image. In the “starter” software package we find a file manager, a notes program, a chat, a task scheduler and others.

The tablet computers of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 family are equipped with the Polaris Office package for working with documents. You can try installing other programs, but we get this for free, so we can stop using it.

There are two cameras. Front – standard VGA camera to support video calls. The rear one is three megapixel. Unlike the previous version, the tablet is now not equipped with a flash. In our opinion, nothing bad happened. Both photo solutions are nothing outstanding. The main camera, at the moment, can be used as a secondary one during a video call, when there is a need to show the situation of the telephone conversation.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 test results

At the same time, the interface of the shooting program is thought out to the smallest detail. All settings are presented and, in addition to built-in filters, there are even such advanced modes as waiting for a smile or taking a panorama. But noise, low resolution and lack of flash preclude comfortable use of the camera for serious purposes. Also, the function of automatically linking coordinates to photographs and video clips could be useful - a good solution for compiling a photo/video report about the trip. But do you want to shoot with a tablet all the time? Moreover, don’t forget how much the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 weighs!

The tablet comes with a power adapter and a USB to Samsung proprietary connector cable. Since such a wire is not very common, at first, to synchronize you will need to constantly pull the cable out of the adapter body. So, perhaps, when purchasing a tablet, if you plan to download a lot of content not over the air, you should think about simultaneously purchasing an additional data cable. The most interesting thing is that such a wire is no longer so difficult to find in kiosks selling electronics and accessories. This is another indicator that Samsung tablets are widespread in the Russian market. Fully charging the device takes more than 3 hours. Unfortunately, the device does not charge from the USB port.

The Touch Wiz shell gives you access to the most popular applications of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with one click

Probably the conclusion in the article about a modern tablet is the most difficult thing. These devices are too similar, and it is not possible to say anything special. The majority of leading manufacturers have begun to produce balanced, interesting solutions that, more often than not, are nothing to criticize. However, this time, the manufacturer made our task easier, for which we thank him very much.

Since the device has not received a significant upgrade, in terms of hardware (everything is at the same level and nothing more), the camera even lost its flash, and the tablet itself has become a little heavier, then it is most likely worth purchasing it for those who are buying their first tablet. The price of admission to this area of the world of mobile electronics is extremely attractive. If you're not looking for certain "gimmicks" such as a camera or a certain screen technology, then the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is a great candidate for your work and play companion.

Tablets: bestsellers of July 2013

Statistical data provided by the Media Markt chain of stores. According to the tradition of the “Bestsellers” project and for the convenience of understanding the material, the models that have become sales leaders are divided into three groups, depending on their cost. In the first group we placed tablets with an average price of 8 to 12 thousand rubles - they belong to the budget segment. The second group consists of tablets priced from 13 to 20 thousand rubles. This is the middle segment, and it can be considered the most massive.

Finally, the third group of tablets - those that cost more than 20 thousand rubles, and there is no upper ceiling - this group includes the most innovative models with the best technical characteristics. Separately, we note that today we are not considering tablets priced less than 8 thousand rubles - the world has changed, and so has the market for portable equipment, and tablets cheaper than this amount, in principle, are nothing special: they are almost completely identical in their functions.

The list of each group consists of five positions. We traditionally start the show with the model in fifth place and end first. Since there are nearly a dozen tablets today, we tried to fit information about each as compactly as possible. Another point concerns the diagonal: many models presented in the lists have both their own younger and older brothers, differing in screen diagonal, the presence of wireless interfaces and the amount of built-in memory. The difference in price is usually several thousand rubles, but these few thousand account for both nerves and an incomparably different experience of ease of use.

Well, the last remark concerns the brands themselves. The descendant of the world's first tablet, Apple iPad mini, is present in all three price categories, not to mention its “big brother”.

Budget models

The tablet is a relatively new product on the market as a whole, but quite serious manufacturers like Samsung, not very well-known ones like 3Q, and even Russian ones like Prestigio have already become interested in it. For a couple of thousand rubles you can find both models with a resistive and low-quality screen at a completely bargain price, as well as quite high-quality devices and even with an IPS screen, if you buy them directly in China. Of course, the concept of “quality” in this case directly correlates with price, since if the same model cost twice as much, it would not even receive a “two” in the overall ranking.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 - long-lived tablet market

Such tablets usually have most of the characteristics of their more expensive and advanced counterparts, but all this is implemented at a slightly lower quality level. The screen is worse, there is less memory, the camera is not the best, and the shell sometimes causes a sad smile. Their design is almost the same, like most tablets in general: black “rectangles” without buttons on the front panel - since they work mainly on Android 4.0/4.1.

Therefore, we have cut off tablets priced below eight thousand rubles, and our budget niche starts from this mark.

5th place: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10"

And we’ll begin our journey through budget models with this long-lived market and chart-topper in the traditional “black frame” type with a silver back cover and an undistinguished case. But in our country it appears three times, occupying, in addition to fifth place in the “state sector” sector, the last two places in the “mid-range sector”. Their differences are minimal, but anyway, first let’s talk about the model from the budget fifth place. Its screen, as the name implies, has a diagonal of 10.1 inches, while its resolution is 1280x800 pixels, but the type of matrix is to everyone’s delight - PLS. As for the actual hardware, the Tab 2 is based on the good old TI OMAP 4430 processor with two gigahertz cores, it has 1 GB of memory and 16 GB of internal memory. There is also support for all the necessary wireless standards, including Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0+HS, aGPS and two cameras: a 2 MP front camera and an awkward 3 MP rear camera.

According to its characteristics, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 now performs quite successfully in the lower price segment

The dimensions inspire respect not only with a thin body (257x176x97 mm) and less than average weight (565 grams), but also with a capacious 7000 mAh battery, which, according to the manufacturer, provides up to ten hours of operation. The operating system on the tablet is standard, Google Android 4.0.

The price of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5110 has dropped to 12,000 rubles today, and compared to what it was a year ago, we can say that the premium tablet has simply jumped into the budget category. However, we repeat, it is also available in the middle segment, and even in duplicate.

4th place: Apple iPad mini

It occupies fourth place in the Media Markt hit parade, and it is quite difficult to compare it with anything. Compared to “adult iPads,” we are dealing with a model that is very modest in terms of technical equipment. But, nevertheless, popular - which once again proves its presence in the rankings in each of the three segments. The models are just a little different. And since the iPad mini now appears in our rating for the first time, let’s outline its configuration in more detail.

Apple iPad mini also features a classic 4:3 aspect ratio

In general, if you don’t know that this is Apple, it will seem that the configuration is very, very weak. But in reality, everything is quite enough. And a dual-core Apple A5 processor with gigahertz cores, and 1 GB of RAM, and a 7.9-inch IPS screen with 162 ppi. Although the last figure is really small, because the screen resolution is only 1024x768 pixels (the aspect ratio is 4:3). The cameras are ordinary, five megapixels on the rear, and 1.2 megapixels on the front. There is also Bluetooth 4.0.

Of course, the tablet also has a number of interesting features and innovations. For example, a new high-speed Lightning port or recording video in FullHD format with a rear camera (even despite the “budget” solution).

The main difference between the three models (that is, one in each segment) is the wireless interfaces and body color. What occupies fourth place in the Media Markt lists has a white body color and only supports Wi-Fi (without mobile communications). By the way, the price of a small iPad is around 12 thousand rubles.

The founder of Apple was wrong to mistrust the seven-inch version of the iPad, it became a hit

3rd and 2nd seats: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7"

The third and second places are occupied by the seven-inch modification. The differences between the two places come down to exactly one parameter – color. In third place we see a gray gadget (or silver), and in second place – white.

In all other respects, this is the same Galaxy Tab 2 that was in fifth place on the list of “state budget” devices, perhaps with minor differences. Well, not quite small - for example, the screen diagonal is seven inches with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. But the matrix type is the same - PLS. The volume of internal memory for owners of both positions is 8 GB, and plus there is support for microSD memory cards up to 32 GB. And the “younger brother” also has 3G, which is very convenient, and supports protocols up to HSPA+. The front camera is worse - only 0.3 MP, and the rear one - the same three megapixels. And in addition to GPS/aGPS, the GLONASS satellite system is supported.

The seven-inch version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is almost no different from the ten-inch one

The battery capacity is 4000 mAh, dimensions are 194x122x11 mm, weight is 344 grams. The average price at the end of July 2013 is about 10.5 thousand rubles for both color schemes.

Best Selling Budget Tablet: Prestigio Multipad PMP7100D3G

And finally, in first place is a semi-domestic product - the Prestigio Multipad PMP7100D3G tablet.

The best-selling budget tablet was a device from Prestigio

Today, the average price of the model is 11 thousand rubles, and this gadget has really gained great popularity. Its screen diagonal is 10.1 inches, the screen is capacitive with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels, but the number of pixels per inch is correspondingly very low - 149 ppi units. Inside it lives a powerful dual-core RockChip RK3066 processor with a frequency of 1600 MHz on a Cortex A9 core, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of integrated flash memory (plus the ability to expand it using microSD cards up to 32 GB), Wi-Fi modules, Bluetooth , 3G and two cameras: rear 2 MP and front with VGA resolution. Plus, the tablet is equipped with a Mali MP-400 gaming graphics adapter, a light sensor and an accelerometer. The dimensions of the device are 257x175x10 mm, weight – 680 grams. The battery capacity is an impressive 6400 mAh, and the operating system uses Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Middle segment

The middle segment is considered the most widespread, and here we see devices that a year ago would definitely have been classified as premium. They have powerful platforms and support for 3G and 4G mobile Internet, and they are already suitable not only for watching movies on the plane, but also for productive games and other resource-intensive tasks.

5th and 4th places: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10"

It’s worth starting the review of mid-segment devices with the same participant with whom we started the previous segment - of course, we are talking about. In the “middle peasants” of “Media Markt” it occupies two places at once - fifth and fourth - and the differences again lie in the color of the case. In fifth place is a black unit, in fourth place is a white unit.

Same Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, but this time with a 3G module

These differences are visual, and technical ones consist in the presence of a slot for SIM cards with 3G support, which is where the differences end, however, for this small addition, sellers beg buyers to give them 3,000 rubles more than for a unit with Wi-Fi only. You can also add that these models have the same amount of permanent memory – 16 GB.

Otherwise, all three devices are identical, which gives us reason to move on to the next participant in the review.

3rd place: Acer Iconia Tab A211

This time it's finally someone new: . This relative, in principle, can also be partly classified as “budget”, since it balances on the edge with models in the mid-price range and costs an average of 13.4 thousand rubles.

All tablets are characterized by several parameters. This, of course, is the screen diagonal (10.1 inches), matrix type (here is a simple TFT), resolution (1280x800) and pixel density per inch - there are only 149 ppi. The A211 has Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, a SIM card slot with 3G, stereo speakers and a very modest battery capacity of 3260 mAh. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to work with such a tablet for very long.

But otherwise he is more than worthy of nice words. Let’s say that its “fiery engine” is quite decent: a quad-core NVidia Tegra 3 with a frequency of 1200 MHz per core (and an NVIDIA GeForce ULP graphics processor), 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. Micro-SD cards up to 32 GB are also supported.

Acer Iconia Tab A211 opens the top three in the mid-range segment

Particular attention should be paid to the 2 MP front camera. If only because there is only one, Acer decided to abandon the rear camera, which can undoubtedly be considered a plus for a mid-range tablet: it is of little use.

But the dimensions of Acer’s brainchild are not the smallest: 260x175x12 mm, and the weight is slightly more than that of its competitors: as much as 711 grams. One last interesting fact is the almost non-existent price fluctuation for the A211. From the very moment of its appearance in February to this day, the device costs an average of 15.5 thousand rubles, which, obviously, is an adequate price and indicates a good price/quality balance.

Acer's brainchild is built on the powerful NVIDIA Tegra 3 platform, but is equipped with a less capacious battery

Best-selling mid-range tablet (2nd and 1st): Apple iPad mini

Well, in the first two places is an old friend - the Apple iPad mini, only this time it’s cooler and more expensive. No, this does not mean that it has more RAM or processor cores - here, as with previous test subjects, the main difference comes down to one thing - the presence of a 3G modem. Actually, this description can be considered complete (everything else is identical to position number 4 in the list of budget “tablets”), all that remains to be said is that in second place in the Media Markt list is a black copy, and in first place is a white one.

And now it’s time to move on to those who have been waiting for so long - the premium segment of tablets. Although there are no special surprises there, and don’t expect a variety of devices either.

No compromises

Tablets costing more than 20 thousand rubles can already be called top-class. They incorporate the latest technology, offering high-quality screens, the most convenient controls and the most innovation possible. True, the figure “20 thousand” is quite arbitrary here. The device can cost 20, 25, or 30 thousand.

5, 3, 2 seats: Apple iPad 4

In fifth place in the Media Markt top list, quite expectedly, it was recently updated and is still the best-selling tablet in principle. As proof, it is enough to mention only the fact that the fourth iPad is not only in last place in this chart, but also in third and second. That is, out of five possible places, Jobs’ brainchild took three.

Apple iPad 4 took 3 out of 5 places in our premium devices chart

And all because Apple. This, as you understand, is the only non-Android device on our list (have you noticed that there are no models on Windows in the Media Markt lists? And then they too), and it is quite difficult to indicate its exact price, since models with variable parameters are in slim There are quite a lot of iPad ranks: from a 16 GB Wi-Fi model to a 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G. But since we have specific devices in specific positions, it will be a little easier.

The main difference between the new iPad 4 and the old iPad 2 and iPad mini is the screen: a new type of matrix and a resolution of 2048x1536 for the new one versus 1024x768 for the old one. The modifications in the second and third places differ slightly, but more on them a little later.

The Apple iPad 4 display is still considered the best

So, the processor of the Apple iPad 4 is a dual-core Apple A6X with 1.4 GHz per core, with 1 GB of RAM. The screen is made using Retina technology with an aspect ratio of 4:3, a gorgeous resolution of 2048x1536 pixels and a diagonal of 9.7 inches with multi-touch support. All models have rear and front cameras of 5 MP and 1.2 MP, respectively. Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and GPS/aGPS with GLONASS are also available. There are models with and without 3G or 4G, with built-in memory sizes ranging from 16 to 64 GB, but in fifth place is the MD522 modification with 16 GB of internal memory and a 3G modem.

Apple iPad 4 has dimensions of 241x186x9 mm and a weight of 662 grams. It is curious that with the same dimensions as the iPad 2, the new product weighs more. And it costs an average of 23 thousand rubles.

4th place: Apple iPad mini

In fourth place on the lists of the Federal Electronics Network was again an Apple product, only this time it is already familiar to us. Which is surprising, since, naturally, there are no improvements in technical characteristics here. Mobile communications using the 4G protocol just appeared, and the amount of built-in memory became a maximum of 32 GB. The average price for a “top iPad mini” is close to the lower limit and amounts to 21 thousand rubles. In general, he is mostly there, but he already has one foot here.

The seven-inch version of the Apple iPad is again on the list, but this time with a 3G module and 32 GB of memory

In the middle of the list and in second place, as we wrote above, live two other iPad 4s, which have the same basic technical characteristics and differ only in two aspects: color and the amount of built-in memory. Both devices are white (a black iPad sits in fifth place), and the one in third place has 32 GB of internal memory and a price of 26 thousand rubles, while the second one has an Apple tablet with 16 GB of memory and an average price of 22 thousand rubles. All three have the ability to connect to the Internet via 4G mobile communications.

The best-selling tablet was the Sony Xperia Z model

Best-selling premium tablet: Sony Xperia Z

Who will top the hit parade? This lucky one turned out to be one of the most interesting gadgets - the Sony Xperia Tablet Z. And this is not just a tablet, but the thinnest and lightest tablet in the world (its thickness is 6.9 mm and its weight is 495 grams). In addition to this, it also has a whole set of impressive advantages.

Let's say the screen is made using Mobile Bravia Engine 2 technology, and although the pixel density of the device is only 224 ppi (at 10.1 inches diagonally), those who first got acquainted with the device note very good picture quality.

And the platform in the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is the most modern, it is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 (APQ8064) with an Adreno 320 graphics coprocessor, and four CPU cores operate at a frequency of 1.5 GHz each. The tablet has more than enough RAM to run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS: 2 GB. Permanent memory - 16 or 32 GB (in the Media Markt charts - 16 GB modification), you can use micro-SDXC memory cards to increase the space up to 64 GB.

The tablet from Sony boasts a record low thickness and weight, as well as dust and moisture protection

We can’t help but say about the two cameras of the new product. The rear camera uses a proprietary Exmor R BSI sensor and has a resolution of 8.1 MP. The front camera has a quite decent resolution of 2.2 MP.

Wireless interfaces are also presented in full, even despite the record-breaking thickness of the device. Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth latest version 4.0, 4G LTE modem and NFC chip.

But all these are boring technical characteristics, and this is not what makes the tablet interesting. And at least by the fact that it was made moisture- and dust-proof, and not just like that, but in accordance with IPX5/IPX7 and IP5X standards; which means, respectively, protection up to short-term immersion in water to a depth of 1 meter (and you can not be afraid to get caught in the rain with it), and almost complete protection from dust with complete protection from user contact with the insides of the device.

Sony Tablet Z combines beauty and functionality

Even externally, this simple “black rectangle” looks very stylish and is available in black and white versions, although it was only in the first one on the Media Markt lists. defiantly flat, the ends are made slightly convex and made of plastic, but this does not give it a “thick” appearance. Yes, even the speakers of the new tablet are not simple either, but support S-Force Front Surround 3D standards, including for headphones (virtual surround sound technology).

This miracle costs around 25 thousand rubles. Quite a lot, but for all these – and this time necessary – “bells and whistles” it’s quite possible to pay that kind of money.

And in this review we will look at the younger model of this family – the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), which has a 7-inch display, but the differences between the two tablets do not end there. So, first things first.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is quite similar to its predecessor, the P1000 model from the Galaxy Tab line of tablets. But it is worth noting that the thickness has decreased, now it is only 10.5 mm, and the surface has turned from a smooth gloss into matte gray plastic. The height and width of the device are 193.7x122.4 mm, and the weight is only 344 g. Given the relative lightness of the device, it is very comfortable to hold in your hand.

There is a touch display on the front side, and a camera “eye” on the back.

The assembly was performed at the proper level - there are no backlashes or squeaks during operation.

Performance, operating system and applications

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), like the model with a 10.1-inch screen, has a 2-core TI OMAP 4430 processor, which has a clock frequency of 1 GHz. There is 1 GB of RAM, and 8, 16 or 32 GB of built-in flash memory, depending on the version. This parameter can be increased, as there is a special slot for microSD memory cards with a maximum capacity of 32 GB. Taken together, these parameters provide fairly high performance that can satisfy almost any, even the most demanding user.

The tablet is running the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system with an integrated TouchWiz shell.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) has a standard set of applications: audio and video players, browser, e-mail client.

In terms of communication capabilities, the gadget supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth3.0, GPS, GLONASS modules, and, depending on the modification, may or may not have a 3G module.

Screen

The tablet is equipped with a 7-inch capacitive touch screen, made using PLS TFT technology, with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. This device differs for the worse from the Galaxy Tab 2 model with a 10.1-inch display, where the resolution is 1280x800 pixels.

The viewing angles of the gadget are excellent, fading in the sun is not very strong. It is worth noting that the image on the display is quite bright and of high quality.

The screen has a protective Gorilla Glass coating.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) tablet has a 3.1 megapixel camera that allows you to shoot in a maximum resolution of 2948x1536 pixels, with autofocus. Video recording can be carried out in Full HD format at a speed of 30 frames/second.

There is a front 0.3 megapixel camera for video telephony.

Battery

The LI-Ion battery in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), unlike the older 10.1-inch model, has a capacity of only 4000 mAh, so the device will last for a maximum of 5-7 hours during average intensive use.

Price

The cost of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) was not officially announced, but it became known that the price in European countries will be about 500 euros for a model with support for 3G networks and 400 euros for without support for 3G networks.

As of May 25, 2012, the cost of the new product became known. The price for the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) modification with 8 GB of memory will be 9,990 rubles (with Wi-Fi support) and 13,990 rubles (with Wi-Fi + 3G support).
