I don't remember the Wi-Fi password. How to find out the WiFi password on your computer and phone. Remembering the password on Asus routers

Hello friends! Today I will continue my series of articles about Wi-Fi routers and everything connected with them, and I will write how to reset the password and settings on a Wi-Fi router to factory settings. If you have a Wi-Fi router installed and you configured it via the web interface, then you most likely know that in order to access the router settings, you need to enter your username and password.

Immediately after purchasing the router, it has a standard login and password to enter the settings, but you can change them in the settings. But what to do if you changed the password and login to enter the Wi-Fi router settings and forgot them, I will write below.

Also, resetting to factory settings can be useful not only for resetting the password, but also for setting all the router settings to default. This can come in handy very often, for example, during the process of setting up a router, you configured it incorrectly. And doing a full factory reset is much easier than looking for parameters that are set incorrectly.

In the article on, I very often advise doing a full reset, and now I will give a link to this article :).

If I have already undertaken to write this article, then I will do everything point by point and write everything I know on this issue.

Why reset your Wi-Fi router?

I already wrote about this above, but it wouldn’t hurt to repeat it. I highlight two main problems in order to solve which you need to reset the router settings.

  1. If you have forgotten the password to access the Wi-Fi router settings. It would be even more correct to write if you forgot the password and login that you set yourself. Because if you haven’t changed it, then you can find the standard password for access, I’ll write about this below.
  2. If you have configured your Wi-Fi router incorrectly and want to configure it again. After the reset procedure, you will receive a clean router, just like from the store.

How to reset settings and password on a router?

If you have forgotten the password and login for your router settings, then do not rush to reset. To access the settings, try the standard login and password that were set for your router. Usually this is admin and admin, on the TL-WR841N, for sure. Also, the data for accessing the settings can be indicated on the router itself, look for a sticker with this data. On the same TL-WR841N they are indicated at the bottom of the router.

Well, if nothing works, then reset.

Attention!

When you reset the router settings, not only the password will be reset, but also all the settings that you specified. The router will need to be configured again.

The process itself is very simple. There is a button on the router, even a hole, that you need to hold with something sharp for ten seconds, better hold it for more than ten seconds. All settings have been reset to factory settings. To log into the control panel, use the standard login and password.

On my TL-WR841N, this button is on the rear panel and looks like this:

Hello! When I write in some instructions that you need to go into the router settings, I try to describe in detail the process itself, how to enter the control panel in order to make some settings there. In most cases, this does not cause any difficulties. But it often happens that we simply forgot the password, and many questions arise about how to get into the settings in this case.

The question itself about logging into the router settings if you have forgotten the password is not very clear. Because the router has at least two passwords. And it’s not clear which one you forgot, and what the problem is specifically in your case.

  • The password that is used to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
  • And the password that you need to enter to enter the router settings. Most often, it is this password that is changed and successfully forgotten. It is clear that until we specify the correct password, we will not get into the router settings. Well, the factory password does not work (which is usually admin), since we changed it.

These are the problems you may encounter when logging into the control panel of your router. Now we will consider a solution based on your case, consider both options.

I’ll immediately provide a link to instructions for solving a variety of problems that you may encounter when entering the settings of your router: There are also links to detailed instructions for certain router manufacturers: TP-LINK, ASUS, D-Link, etc.

If you forgot your Wi-Fi password and can’t access your router settings

This is the first option in which we do not remember the password for our Wi-Fi network. And perhaps we cannot connect to it. And we need to go into the router settings to see or change the password.

In this case, everything is very simple:

  • Firstly, we have very detailed instructions on how to... You can look at the password on your computer (if you have one) and just remember it. Connect to the wireless network and go to the control panel.
  • Secondly, you can go into the router settings from the device that is currently connected to your Wi-Fi. And already in the router settings, look at the forgotten password, or change it.
  • Thirdly, we connect to the router via a network cable and go to the control panel. In this case, we won’t need a Wi-Fi password at all. If you don’t know how to connect to the router via cable, here’s a detailed guide.

I think this problem has been sorted out.

If you forgot the password to enter the router settings

This happens most often. The control panel of each router is password protected. There you need to specify a username and password. This is necessary to protect the settings so that everyone who connects to your network cannot access them.

If the router is new and not yet configured, then the standard password and username are used. In most cases, these are admin and admin. Or there is no protection at all. We set or change this password during the process of setting up the router. I always advise doing this in my instructions. And there is even a separate one.

So, we changed this password, configured the router, and forgot it. And then we urgently needed to go into the settings, and we don’t remember the password. On the authorization page we specify some name and password, but nothing happens, the page simply reloads, or we receive a message that the password is incorrect.

That's all, we can't get into the settings. If you can’t remember this data, and perhaps you didn’t change the password, you will have to reset the router settings. After this, we will go to the control panel according to the factory settings, which are indicated at the bottom of the router, on the sticker.

To reset settings, you need to hold down the button for about 10 seconds, which is usually labeled as: RESET, WPS/RESET, Cross, Default. It all depends on the model of your router. The button may be recessed into the body, and you need to press it with something sharp. The router's power must be turned on. This button looks something like this:

After returning to factory settings, use the data specified on the router itself to log into the control panel. If the factory data is not indicated there, then there is no default password.

If you encounter difficulties resetting the settings, we have detailed instructions on our website for most manufacturers. If you don’t find it, write in the comments and I’ll give you a link.

If something doesn’t work out, write the same way, we’ll try to solve your problem.

How can you recover your WiFi network password if you have forgotten it? It happens that you have set up a home Wi-Fi network (or someone has set it up for you), naturally the network must be password-protected so that cunning neighbors cannot use the Internet via Wi-Fi for free, but after some time the password is forgotten, and the piece of paper, on which it was saved is lost. Naturally, when you try to connect a new device, it will ask for a password, but since you forgot it, then of course nothing will work. Therefore, in this article I will help you restore it.

There are 3 ways to find out the forgotten password for your Wi-Fi. View the saved password on a Windows computer, in the settings of the router itself, or in the configuration files of an Android smartphone.

View Wi-Fi password in computer settings

This method is applicable for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

  • Need to go to "Start" - "Control Panel" - Network and Sharing Center. In the menu on the left, open the item "Wireless Network Management"
  • We see the name of our network there, right-click on it and select "Properties", then go to the tab "Safety".
  • Check the box “Display entered characters” and we are glad that you can see your password.

You can also find out the password in the settings of the WiFi router itself.

You need to go to the interface of your Wi-Fi router, usually you need to type 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of the browser. The system will ask for a login and password. If they have not been changed, then the standard ones will do. admin - admin or admin - 1234. There in the section Wireless security You can see your password.

If you do not know the router password, then only a factory reset will help you. All devices have a special button to do it. If you hold down this button for 10-15 seconds (you may need a knitting needle or any other thin object), the router will be reset to its original state and you will have to configure it again, accordingly your password will be deleted

The network distributed by the router must be protected with a password, otherwise you may lose not only paid traffic, but also personal data. But you can forget the strong password you set. In this case, there will be two options: install a new code or restore the lost one.

When can I recover my password?

A forgotten password can be recovered if you have previously entered it on at least one of your devices: phone, tablet, computer. You can also view the password in the router’s control panel, but you can only do this if you have previously logged into your account and the password for it has been saved in the browser’s memory.

If the above options are not relevant in your case, there is only one option left - resetting the password and setting it again. The only thing you need for this is physical access to the router.

Recovering your password

All popular operating systems (Windows, Android, and iOS) have a built-in function that saves the password in the device’s memory. The password is explicitly stored on your device if it connects to the network automatically without requiring you to enter a passcode.

If every time you try to connect to your own Wi-Fi, the system asks you for a password, it means that you have checked the box next to the “Do not save password” condition, so it is useless to look for the code in the device’s memory.

On Android

To retrieve the password from an Android device, you must be rooted. The system stores the code in encrypted files, access to which is prohibited without root rights.

Once you have root rights, you can choose one of two methods: either manually find the file with the necessary data, or use a special application.

Through file search

To find the file you need, you will most likely need a third-party explorer, since standard operating system explorers hide some files or do not display some extensions. It is recommended to use Total File Commander, ES or Root Browser applications:

  1. Once in File Explorer, navigate to /data/misc/wifi. You should look for the initial folder in the internal memory, and not on the SD card.

    Go to the /data/misc/wifi section

  2. Once in the final section, expand the wpa_supplicant.conf file (in earlier versions of the operating system, this name was replaced by a random set of numbers). The system will not find a program with which you can open this extension, so use any text editor or browser.

Select any program to deploy the wpa_supplicant.conf file

  3. A list will open with various information. Find blocks starting with the word network. Each of them will contain the line ssid - the name of the network, and psk - the password. Find the name of the network that interests you and view the password for it.

We are looking for the network block and a line with the name of the network we need

Through a special application

You can find the Wi-Fi Passwords application on the Play Market. It automatically recognizes the name and passwords of all saved networks and displays them in the form of a convenient list:

  1. Go to the Play Store and search for this app. Using the search, you will see many programs with a similar name, but you need to download exactly the one with the mark.

Install the Wi-Fi Passwords application from the Play Market store

  2. Once you open the app, give it root access.

    Allow access to root rights

  3. You will see a list of networks and passwords for them. Find the Wi-Fi you need and find out its password.

Find the desired network in the list and find out the password

On iOS

To view a saved network password on iOS, you need a jailbroken device. You will have to use a special application that only works with jailbroken devices. Keep in mind that after jailbreaking, you may have warranty issues and personal data leakage from your phone.

In older versions of iOS, it was possible to view passwords from saved networks using built-in functions: you just had to find the “Passwords” item in the settings, which contained all the necessary information. In new versions released after iOS 7, the section remained, but information about Wi-Fi networks was made inaccessible.

Via a third party application

The required application is distributed free of charge in the Cydia store. You can use it, but if for some reason it refuses to work, choose any other application with a similar name and functionality.

On Windows 10

In Windows 10, finding out the password is easier than on other operating systems, since the OS does not hide it:

  1. Press the Win + R combination on your keyboard to open the quick access window. Write the ncpa.cpl request and execute it.

    Execute the ncpa.cpl request

  2. In the window that opens, find your network and double-click on it with the left mouse button.

Double click on the desired network

  3. Expand the wireless network properties.

    Open network properties

  4. Go to the "Security" tab.

    Open the “Security” section

  5. The password will be indicated in the “Network security key” line.

We look at the value from the line “Network security key”

How to connect without a password

If you were unable to recover your password or there is no need for it yet, you can use WPS technology - it allows you to connect to a password-protected network without entering a password. The only thing you need is physical access to the router.

All modern routers have a WPS button. Sometimes it is large and displayed separately from the others, sometimes it is small and combined with the Reset button (short press - WPS, long press - Reset). Inspect your router to find it, and if you don’t find it, refer to the instructions that came with the device.

Looking for the WPS button on the router

Via Android

To connect to a requested Wi-Fi network via Android without a password, follow these steps:

Via iOS

WPS is not supported on iOS devices. On iPhone and iPad, you can connect to a Wi-Fi network only by entering a password.

Via Windows 10

Windows has a feature that allows you to connect to a password-protected network via WPS. But first you need to make sure that your computer can pick up a Wi-Fi signal. If it is capable of this, follow these steps:

Password recovery through router settings

All router manufacturers create special programs that allow you to control many parameters of the device. But they do not install them into the computer’s memory, but provide access to them through a browser. By logging into the control panel, you can see information about the set password.

The only difficulty that may arise is that to enter the router control panel you need to enter your username and password. The following combinations are usually used: login - admin, password - admin or 000000. You can find out what data is used by default for your model in the instructions for the router. If the standard password has been changed and you don’t remember it, you won’t be able to use this method.

TP-Link

For TP-Link routers, the recovery process is as follows:

Asus

On Asus devices, you can get the password in the same way:

D-Link

In D-Link routers you need to do the following steps:

ZyXEL

To recover your password through the ZyXEL administrative panel, do the following:

Tenda

In Tenda routers, you can access the password like this:

Linksys

Linksys routers also contain information about the wireless network password in clear text:

What to do if you couldn’t recover your password

If you have tried all the methods described above, but were unable to obtain the password, there is only one option left - reset the router settings. By doing this, you will roll back its firmware to its original state. Please note that all other settings you have ever made will also no longer apply.

To reset the router, just press the Reset button (usually it is small, located on the back panel of the router and can be slightly recessed) for 10–15 seconds, without releasing it until the router reboots. As soon as the router turns on again, the settings will be reset and the network will no longer have a password. It should be installed immediately to avoid unauthorized people connecting to your network.

Press the reset button for 10–15 seconds to reset the router to factory settings

The Wi-Fi network password can be viewed on devices that were previously connected to the router. You can also use WPS technology to connect to the network without a password. The current access code is located in the router control panel. If you cannot recover your password, you can perform a factory reset and then set a new password.

What to do if you forgot your Wi-Fi password and lost access to the network, the main thing is not to despair and follow our instructions!

Let's start with the simple and move on to the complex.

Method one

When creating a wifi network and initial setup, a login/password pair (credentials) was specified, and all PCs, laptops and gadgets were connected. But it happens that you need to connect a new device or you have reinstalled Windows, so what should you do if you forgot your wifi password?

As a last resort, you can always try according to our instructions.

System registry (tray)

Let's use one of the already connected devices.

  • Windows XP, 7 and 8:
In the taskbar, right-click on the network image (wifi sign) - “Network_and_sharing_control center”

  • Windows 10:
We also go to the tray and click on the active connection - if this is the wifi connection we need.

    The following steps are identical:
  • Select the desired wireless connection - one left click

  • "Wireless_network_properties"

  • “_Security_” → check the box “_Display_entered_characters_”

Here is one method if you forgot your wifi password. Let's look at the case where the Internet status is not displayed on the taskbar.

Do you need to find out your password via your phone? No problem either! Check out our article about!

Look to the root!

We remind you what to do if you forgot your Wi-Fi password. It depends on the Windows settings whether or not the Wi-Fi network icon is displayed in the notification area. If there is no such active network icon, where to look for the wifi key in the instructions below:

  • Windows XP, 7 and 8:
    “Start” → “Control Panel”
  • In Large Icons view → Network and Sharing Center

  • Windows 10:
Right click “Start” → “Control Panel”

Also sets the large icon mode and select “Network and Sharing Center”

The following steps are identical for all OS versions:
  • "Wireless Network Management"

  • Right-click on the desired position, calling the context menu → “Properties”

  • Select the “Security” tab → check the “Display entered icons” checkbox

Here's another way to find your password if you forgot it.

Method two

Let's consider the situation if you forgot your Wi-Fi password and there is no other connected computer. So step by step on how to restore:
