I don’t know why I stubbornly used Apple Notes... I put up with extremely low functionality, got used to the eye-catching “flat design” in yellow colors, tolerated just disgusting synchronization between iOS and OS X. Probably, until recently, the simplicity of the solution and its 100% appleiness won over. After all, this is so correct - to use Apple Notes.

But a couple of weeks ago, in Notes on a Mac, I caught a glitch, which was impossible to ignore - the hastily written paragraph of text in a new note suddenly disappeared. Then the failure repeated several more times. When syncing, which took place with a noticeable delay, Notes "lost" the contents of the recording. Perhaps this problem has some kind of solution (you need to unlink Apple ID or reinstall OS X, for example), but I did not waste time looking for it and switched to choosing a replacement for Apple Notes.

For a better understanding of my choice, I will explain how I used Notes. For me, the application served as a "staging post" for a variety of records: sketches of articles, shopping lists, promising ideas and plans, notes for conversations. Some of the notes lost their relevance after a day or two, the other was sent to Evernote for orderly storage. The beauty of the program was its simplicity and accessibility always and everywhere - literally a second and everything that is supposed to be recorded is on the iPhone, Mac, in the cloud. Conveniently.

Apple Notes on Mac

Since there was no desire to change habits, I was looking for something similar to Apple Notes. Mandatory with iOS and Mac apps, fast sync, basic features, and preferably free. After going through several popular solutions, I came across an unfamiliar Simplenote... And as a result I stopped at it.

Simplenote on Mac

Simplenote impresses with its approach. This service celebrates simplicity, but the simplicity of app design and the use of unformatted text does not rule out extensive additional features. The service is available in a browser, on OS X, iOS, Android and Kindle... He has some kind of non-obvious monetization model. It seems like there is a premium subscription, but it's hard to find information about it and no functionality is blocked in the free account. And Simplenote works extremely well - very fast, consistently clear.

App design on iOS: light or dark

What's the main thing in a notebook? The answer is obvious - the convenience of taking notes. A new entry in Simplenote is created in one tap, using the first paragraph of text (or a fragment thereof) as the heading. To organize the records, tags... This is really more convenient than storing notes in folders, because you can assign several tags to one record at once. It is also possible to pin certain entries to the top of the list.

Created in Simplenote applications the text does not support even the simplest formatting, except that links and dates are highlighted. It is worth noting that the web version of the notebook is slightly ahead of the applications - it has support for Markdown formatting. But at a basic level, no HTML export.

Search well organized. It is available in the list of notes and directly in the entry, and in any case leads to the desired word (but not only to the note containing it).

About synchronization worth mentioning separately. When connecting devices to fast internet, recordings in Simplenote programs are updated with a delay of 2-3 seconds. Literally slightly slower than Google drive, and dozens of times faster than Apple Notes. For a week of use, I had no failures or obvious delays in updating the data.

In mid-2016, the already expensive note-taking service Evernote significantly tightened its policy both in relation to users who prefer to stay on a free subscription, and to those who in good faith pay for additional services... If you are tired of feeling discomfort and paying a lot of money, then it's time to find a worthy alternative, and it is!

Gradually, from a simple, but very convenient and quite functional note-taking device, Evernote has turned into a clumsy harvester, half of which you most likely will not use. The repression affected the following things:

A very powerful tool that allows you not only to create notes, but also work at the level of word and spreadsheet processors like Word and Excel.

The first thing you'll come across is easy import of documents and notes from Evernote, Google Drive, Dropbox and Box. You don't need to use any third-party utilities and instructions. All common formats are supported - .doc, .docx, .rtf, .txt, .xls, .xlsx, .csv.

You can create folders, documents and tables. Quip has a complete layout with to-do lists, headers, images, links, other important stuff, and even Markdown. And the best part is that all this is available for free and without restrictions for one user.

But the whole point is that Quip is team-oriented. There are private and public chats, comments (not only for the entire document, but for any part of it), notifications, mentions and customizable permissions. True, the team already needs to purchase a subscription.

Quip is also a truly cross-platform solution. There are free clients for iOS, watchOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and the web version.

Microsoft OneNote

The OneNote client has long been delighting users of all major platforms (iOS, Android, WP, Windows, macOS) with a quality and, most importantly, completely free client. From Evernote you can move without any need using a special utility developed by Microsoft.

Five things I really love about OneNote:

  • offline work with a client;
  • web clipper for quickly sending web pages and other information from a desktop browser;
  • no restrictions on synchronization between devices;
  • cross-platform;
  • EVERYTHING IS FREE!

All information is stored on OneDrive servers. And just about soon, Microsoft will reduce the number of free gigabytes available for storing files from 15 to 5. Although for personal use this is more than enough.

As for the client himself, there are two important nuances. First of all, the application does not "flutter like a butterfly." Although the client has "lost weight" a lot, one can feel a certain thoughtfulness at work (especially at the launch).

And the desktop versions, regardless of platforms, cannot boast of minimalism. The interface smells like a clerical.

Secondly, the structural hierarchy is not for everybody. The notes themselves are made in the form of notebook tabs. When there are many such tabs and they have long names, then navigation is uncomfortable. For some projects, this view will be convenient, but for something simpler (when you want to quickly jot down a note) or complex, it may no longer work.
