How to configure the date and time on Android. How to synchronize time on a computer with a server. How to synchronize time on a computer with an Internet how to synchronize time on a computer

Time in the era of information technology has gained special importance for a modern person. Each of us at least several times a day looks at the clock. Many regularly synchronize their time report devices through various sources, including the Internet. The exact time is sometimes plays sometimes a decisive role in affairs, where even minutes are important, and seconds. For example, bidding on stock exchanges may result in collapse for a player whose watches showed the wrong time. Let's try to set up your email clock on your computer and synchronize the exact time via the Internet.

Time synchronization technology

At the beginning I will tell you about technology, with which the exact time is obtained from the Internet sources. The whole time synchronization process is carried out through a special network protocol called NTP (Network Time Protocol). This protocol provides a set of various rules and mathematical algorithms, thanks to which an accurate time setting occurs on your computer with a difference of several hundred and one second. There is a protocol and systems that do not require such accurate synchronization called SNTP.. The difference in the source and the device receiver can be up to 1 second.

The transmission technology of the parameters of the exact time is a multilayer structure, where each underlying layer of electronic devices is synchronized with the overlying. The lower the technological layer, the less accurate will be time received from it. But this in theory, in practice, it all depends on the set of parameters participating in the synchronization system and obtain more accurate time, for example, from the fourth layer of devices than from the third.

At the zero level of this transmission chain, the device reporting devices are always located, roughly speaking, hours. This watch is molecular, atomic or quantum time counting devices and are called reference. Such devices do not transmit the time parameters to the Internet directly, usually they are connected to the primary computer by high-speed interface with minimal delays. These computers constitute the first layer in the technological chain. On the second layer, machines receiving from the first layer of devices through the network connection, most often via the Internet. All subsequent levels will receive information about the exact time according to the same network protocols from the overlying layers.

Synchronization of time in Windows

Let's try to synchronize time by means of systems Windows XP, Windows 2003 . To do this, click on the clock that you are located in the tray (usually this right bottom corner of the screen) to invoke date and time settings. At the same time, be sure to check the settings " hour belt", Which are located there and adjust them if necessary.

For Windows Vista, Windows 7 Also enough to click on the clock at the bottom of the screen and go to the settings via a special link "Changing the date and time settings"

Then go to the "Time on the Internet" tab and click the "Change Parameters" button.

The time settings window over the Internet, similar to the same window from Windows XP, 2003.

This window has an option for automatic reconciliation hours via the Internet, which is available opposite the inscription " Synchronize with the time server on the Internet". If you enable it, putting a tick, then periodically the time of your computer will be refined via the Internet server the operating system itself.

Further, opposite the option " Server:"The user is available from the list of addresses from which synchronization will be made. Try to choose one of them and click the button. Update now". If after a certain time, under the list, the synchronization error will appear on the list, enter one of the server addresses below and check the connection to it.

Below is a video that will show the system clock setting process in Windows 7 and synchronization.

Change the period of automatic time synchronization in Windows

By default, Windows operating system appeals to synchronization servers only once a week. Provided that the user put an automatic time check, of course. For some such a period may seem quite large or can be quite frequent than I would like. Fortunately, the system provides a change in this parameter through the registry settings.

Open the window " Perform"Through the menu" Start". In the command prompt type regedit.and run the button " OK.". You need to get to the next section alternately

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SYSTEM - CURRENTCONTROLSET - SERVICES - W32TIME - TIMEPROVIDERS - NTPClient

and select a parameter in the window on the left Specialpollinterval. The value is indicated here 604800 If you translate it into a decimal calculus system. This is the number of seconds equal to one week. You can make another meaning that you need to convert it in seconds.

In addition to the hours working on your computer, there will probably have other sources of time with which you have to periodically take in order to not be out of the general work schedule or schedule. The clock can be wall, desktop, wroll and accuracy of time displayed by them is not always true. Meanwhile, trying to synchronize the time of these devices manually, many turn to television sources. However, such tools can transmit a signal with significant delays, so it is impossible to guarantee the exact time to a minute from these sources.

Fortunately, the global network has many accommodated time services that will help you in setting clock at the exact time, up to one second. Of course, the Internet is not chanting in terms of all the same temporary information transfer delays, but such delays with good communication usually do not make up more than one second.

Multifunctional speed of accurate time. In addition to the main destination, it allows the clock with the clock of various time zones, learn calendar information of the current day, make a thin setting of time output format to the screen through the site and display style, display the current year calendar, find out the time in any of the cities of the globe and much more. Perhaps one of the most useful and multidimensional services of the exact time with which I had to work with.

A beautiful image of a dial with moving arrows will delight lovers of stylish virtual design. In addition to the information about the exact time, here you can find data on the time of sunrise and sunset in your area, as well as a link to the weather forecast for the specified city.

There is almost nothing superfluous on the screen, only the basic information about the exact time, plus its comparison with the clock of your system. However, there is a small menu with additional functions, such as the remaining time until the end of the light of the Mayan calendar, the stopwatch, the dates converter and the time zone map.

It is also available to other web resources that may have assistance in solving your questions.

The small battery is built into your computer's motherboard, which allows you to control PC clocks, even when the computer is turned off. If the battery is discharged, you will see error messages, such as the "CMOS system checksum that is incorrect - the default configuration is used," when the computer starts, and the date and time is reset to the default date set by the BIOS manufacturer. You can still start the computer by clicking the button to continue the download, and Windows will boot as usual.

Problems begin with the use of a computer when the time being created, variable and recoverable for files and folders confuses, emails sent and obtained using your postal client software are marked with a much older date, because of which emails are moving down. All secure HTTPS sites are not uploaded to your web browser, test periods can expire immediately, etc. Problems start from a computer where the time being created, variable and removed for files and folders confuses, sent and received electronic letters With your email client, the software is marked with older Windows has the function of automatic time synchronization, so that time on your computer remains accurate, but, unfortunately, it is planned to run it only once a week.

Synchronize the clock with the Internet server in the Internet time settings.

Automatic synchronization of system hours

  1. In the search field in the Start menu, enter the "Date and Time" menu and press the Enter key, it must be a date control panel and time.
  2. In the Date and Time dialog box, click the Internet Time tab.
  3. Click the "Change Settings" button. In the User Account Control dialog box, click the "Continue" button (if it is displayed).
  4. In the Time Settings dialog box on the Internet, click the Arrow of the Server drop-down list and select another time server. The default value is Time.Windows.com, try time.nist.gov and see if it works for you.
  5. Click the Update button now to update your computer clock and check your computer's time.
  6. Press OK buttons to close the dialog boxes.

Configure the system to update the start time.

To fulfill forced update, you must perform the following actions as an administrator (or system):

SC Start W32Time Task_Started

For a forced update at startup, you must execute this command on behalf of the administrator. You can do this using the task scheduler. To do this, follow these steps on the name of the administrator:

schtasks / Create / TN "Set time when starting" / SC OnStart / RU System / TR "SC Start W32Time Task_started".

Software for free time synchronization

This time you may have problems with synchronization with your computer due to changes in the settings or interference from third-party software, faulty CMOS battery or other hardware problems. If Windows does not synchronize the system time correctly, the date and time may be incorrect each time the computer is turned on, which can cause problems with multiple computers or browser. To solve this problem, we have a large number of third-party time synchronization programs that can update your system from the Internet.

There are several ways to synchronize the time on a computer with the Internet Windows 10. But not all of them give a constant effect. Some options allow you to restore the clock only for a certain period, after which the system begins to work incorrectly and automatically translates for several hours into one or the other side.

To sync, the computer must be connected to the Internet to communicate with the server. Then, when sending a request, a response is sent, which carries the exact value in itself. The user can independently send requests, configure automatic synchronization with a certain period and select servers to obtain the most accurate time value.

How to synchronize

If on Windows 10, time synchronization via the Internet is carried out at a time, then it is necessary to follow the following sequence of actions:

  1. Having a cursor for a while and press the left mouse button.
  2. Open the "Date and Time Settings" section.
  3. In the window that opens, find the clock synchronization unit.
  4. Press the "Synchronize" button.

After that, the computer will be set to Windows Server.

How to reduce time update interval

The standard period of re-sync for setting time over the Internet is one week. To reduce this value, you must use the registry. Standard functionality created for the average user does not offer such an opportunity.

To start the registry, you must enter "Regedit" in the command line window and press ENTER. Next, you need to open the HKEYLM branch and go along the path: System \\ CurrentControlSet \\ Services \\ W32Time \\ TimeProviders \\ NtpClient. Next, you need to find the SpecialPollInterval parameter, which will be 604800 according to the standard, which is equal to the number of seconds in the same week. This parameter must be changed to another, which will be less, for example, by 3600, which is equal to one hour. This means that the system can automatically update every hour. When the desired value is entered, you must specify the following combination to the command prompt: NET STOP W32Time && Net Start W32Time.

Installing more frequent update is not recommended. The reason is that due to the too frequent sends of requests, the server protective system can block the user's IP address. Also should not be set a period of more than a day, as this will affect the accuracy of the time of the system hours.

Automation function

If manually, the synchronization procedure has to be carried out often, then you can automate this action. You will need to enable the "Set Time Automatically" option in the "Date and Time" settings. Then the servers will conduct checks for the accuracy of the clock on the PC without user participation.

Note!Even if the main site is disabled or unavailable to obtain accurate data, the system will automatically connect to additional servers.

Team String Tools

To get rid of the need to search for the necessary funds for managing computer functions, you can use the command line. It will make an action without additional clicks. All that will be needed is to enter multiple commands.

To synchronize the time in this way, you must open the command line, click on the search bar (located next to the Start button) and enter the "command line".

Note!Call the command line can be a combination of Win + R keys.

In the window that opens, you need to enter "CMD" and press ENTER. Now the user will be able to change the server settings from where the data on the exact value will be downloaded. For this, three teams are introduced:

  1. installing a specific server with which computer will be synchronized:
W32TM / Config / ManualPeerList: [Sync Server Address] / SyncFromFlags: Manual / Reliable: YES
  2. confirmation of changes settings for Windows service:
    W32TM / CONFIG / UPDATE
  3. restarting service for correct operation:
    Net Stop W32Time && Net Start W32Time

But there is a lightweight way to apply such a synchronization method.

Lightweight method

The open policy of the Windows operating system allows you to expand its functionality using third-party applications. Therefore, in the event of difficulties, an additional software can be used when configuring synchronization parameters.

All that will be needed is to find the program, install it and specify the necessary data in it, after which all the actions described above will be made without user intervention. Such programs can act even better built-in Windows tools. When determining the time, a delay will be taken into account, which is due to the need to transmit data packets via the Internet.

Inochanned settings

But not all possibilities are open to users. So there are settings that can be used only with special programs or manually, opening the registry. One such feature is to set the update period for synchronization with the server.

The local network

Set the single time is possible in the local network when computers are connected to each other. Then one of the devices acts as a reference server. The synchronization method on the local network will be similar as when connected to the Internet server. To start the work, you will need to start the NTP server on the PC, which will set the value for the rest of the connected devices.

Note! The main computer from which time is distributed over the network is recommended to synchronize Windows Windows over the Internet.

To do this, open the registry and pass along the path: HKLM \\ System \\ CurrentControlSet \\ SERVICES \\ W32Time \\ TimeProviders \\ NtServer. Here you need to change the value opposite the Enabled to 1, after which it is forced to restart the Windows service on the command line using Net Stop W32Time, and after entering Net Start W32Time.

The computer on which this procedure was carried out becomes a guide for other devices connected to the local network. It should always be active, and you will also need constant verification of the performance of this PC. To find out whether the server is currently active, you can with any of the computers connected to the network. To do this, enter the W32TM / QUERY / CONFIGURATION command. If the system works, the value "1" will be displayed.

Popular servers

In addition to standard online servers provided by Windows, you can work with other sources of correct time. There are three representatives of the most used among servers.

NTP-Servers

On the main page of the site of the same name with the domain .NET, the user will immediately see how much the delay on its computer with the servers from NTP-Servers. You can find active servers on the appropriate tab. It is not necessary to register on the site. Best is suitable for residents of Russia.

The servers are a hardware and software complex, which is located in the Russian city of Saratov. All addresses provided are divided into two tiers. The first is the standards of time, the second server, which are synchronized with the first tier. Because of the maximum low delay, there is no difference in the indicators.

NTP Pool Project.

This is a cluster that offers to join servers located worldwide. At the time of writing, there were more than 4,300 points. Access to all addresses is open, but only registered users will be able to connect their computer as a server. Otherwise, see the list and server status will be impossible.

Time in UA.

Current time service oriented in residents of Ukraine. The work is carried out according to the standard NTP and SNTP protocols. Total offer three addresses for data receipt.

Note! They participants in the NTP Pool Project project, which was described above.

Prevent problems

Before synchronizing the time on a computer with the Internet on Windows 7, you need to consider the most common problems that can be faced with:

  • Clock through some gap starts to lag behind. The problem may be in the CMOS battery. If she weakened, then it needs to be replaced with a new one.
  • Time is changing after rebooting the computer. In this case, the priority data source is BIOS, it is there that you need to change the time and date settings.
  • Synchronization does not help change the time. Then you need to change the update interval.
  • Watch reset changes over time. Most likely the problem is in the wrong time zone or date.

Not every user is required to maintain the most accurate time on its PC. But synchronization allows you to get rid of the need to verify the correctness of the set time. It can be carried out not only in manual mode, but also configure the automatic selection of a request to a special server.

All articles of our site are undergoing an audit of the technical consultant. If you have any questions, you can always set them on his page.

It is no secret that even electronics cannot achieve absolute accuracy. This is evidenced by at least the fact that after a certain period, the computer's system hours, which are displayed in the lower right corner of the screen, may have a difference with real time. To prevent such a situation, there is the possibility of synchronization with the Internet server of the exact time. Let's see how this is done in practice in Windows 7.

The main condition in which the clock synchronization can be performed is the availability of Internet connection on the computer. You can synchronize the clock in two ways: using standard Windows tools and applying third-party software.

Method 1: time synchronization with third-party programs

We will figure it out how to synchronize time via the Internet with third-party programs. First of all, you need to choose software for installation. SP TimeSync is considered one of the best programs in this direction. It allows you to synchronize the time on a PC with any atomic clocks available on the Internet via NTP Time Protocol. We'll figure it out how to install it and how to work in it.

  1. After starting the installation file, which is located in the downloaded archive, a welcome window of the installer opens. Click "Next".
  2. In the next window you need to determine which place the application will be installed on the computer. By default, this is a folder of disk software. C.. Without significant necessity it is not recommended to change this parameter, so just click "Next".
  3. The new window reports that SP TimeSync will be installed on your computer. Press "Next" To start the installation.
  4. The installation process of the SP TimeSync on the PC is started.
  5. Next opens the window, which refers to the end of the installation. To close it, click "Close".
  6. To start the application, click the button. "Start" In the lower left corner of the screen. Next go by name "All programs".
  7. In the current list of the installed software, look for the Sp TimeSync folder. To go to further actions, click on it.
  8. The SP TimeSync icon appears. Click on the specified icon.
  9. This action initiates the launch of the SP TimeSync application window in the tab "Time". So far, only local time is displayed in the window. To display the server, time Click on the button. "Get time".
  10. As you can see, now simultaneously in the SP TimeSync window displays the local and server time. Indicators such as difference, delay, start, NTP version, accuracy, relevance and source (as an IP address) are displayed. In order to synchronize computer clock, press "Set time".
  11. After this action, the local PC time is given in accordance with the server, that is, synchronized with it. All other indicators are reset. To compare local time with the server again, press again. "Get time".
  12. As we see, this time the difference is very small (0.015 seconds). This is due to the fact that synchronization was carried out quite recently. But, of course, it is not very convenient to synchronize time on the computer manually. To configure this process automatically, go to the tab "NTP client".
  13. In field "Get every" You can specify a period of time in numbers through which the clock will be automatically synchronized. Nearby in the drop-down list, it is possible to choose a unit of measurement:
    • Seconds;
    • Minutes;
    • Clock;
    • Day.

For example, set the interval in 90 seconds.

In field "NTP server" If you wish, you can specify the address of any other synchronization server, if the one that is set by default ( pool.ntp.org.) For some reason you do not fit. In field "Local port" It is better not to make changes. By default, there is a number «0» . This means that the program connects to any free port. This is the most optimal option. But, of course, if you want to assign a specific port number for SP TimeSync for SP TimeSync, you can do it, scoring it in this field.

  14. In addition, in the same tab, the accuracy control settings are available in the Pro version:
    • Time attempt;
    • The number of successful attempts;
    • The limit number of attempts.

But, since we describe the free version of SP TimeSync, we will not dwell on these opportunities. And for further configuration of the program, we will move to the tab "Options".

  15. Here, first of all, we are interested in "Run at the start of Windows". If you want SP TimeSync to automatically start when the computer starts, and not do it every time manually, then near the specified item, check the box. In addition, you can install ticks opposite items "Fold the icon in the tray"I. "Run with a folded window". By setting these settings, you will not even notice that the SP TimeSync program works, as all time synchronization actions through the installed interval will be carried out in the background. The window will need to be called only if you decide to adjust the previous settings.

In addition, for users of the version Pro, the possibility of using IPv6 protocol is available. To do this, just install a tick near the corresponding item.

In field "Tongue" If you wish, you can choose from the list one of the 24 available languages. The default system is set, that is, in our case, Russian. But English, Belarusian, Ukrainian, German, Spanish, French and many other languages are available.

Thus, we set up the SP TimeSync program. Now every 90 seconds will be automatic updating Windows 7 time in accordance with the server time, all this is performed in the background.

Method 2: Synchronization in the "Date and Time" window

In order to synchronize the time by using the built-in Windows features, the following actions algorithm must be performed.

  1. Click on the system clock located in the bottom corner of the screen. In the window that opens, move on the inscription "Changing the date and time settings".
  2. After starting the window, go to the section "Time on the Internet".
  3. If this window states that the computer is not configured to automatically synchronize, then in this case, click on the inscription "Change parameters ...".
  4. The setup window is started. Install a tick near the item "Synchronize with the time server on the Internet".
  5. After performing this action field "Server"That has been inactive before that, becomes active. Click on it if you wish to choose a server other than the default set ( time.Windows.com) Although it is not necessary. Select the appropriate option.
  6. After that, you can make immediate synchronization with the server by clicking "Update Now".
  7. After executing all the settings, press Ok.
  8. In the window "Date and time" Also press Ok.
  9. Now your time on the computer will be synchronized with the time of the selected server with a frequency once a week. But if you want to set another period of automatic synchronization, it will not be so easy to do, as in the previous method using third-party software. The fact is that in the Windows 7 user interface, it is simply not provided for changing this setting. Therefore, you have to make adjustments to the system registry.

This is a very responsible business. Therefore, before switching to the procedure, think well, whether you need to change the automatic synchronization interval, and are you ready to cope with this task. Although there is nothing extraordinarily difficult. It should be easily approaching the case responsibly, to avoid fatal consequences.

If you still decided to make changes, then call the window "Run"By typing a combination Win + R.. In the field of this window, enter the command:

    Click Ok.

  10. The Windows 7 system registry editor opens. In the left part there are registry sections presented in the form of placed in the tree-shaped catalogs. Go to section "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", twice by clicking on its name with the left mouse button.
  11. Next, then go to the subsections in the same way. "SYSTEM", "CURRENTCONTROLSET" and "Services".
  12. A very large list of subsections opens. Look in it the name "W32time". Click on it. Next, go to subsections "TimeProviders" and "NTPClient".
  13. On the right side of the registry editor presented the parameters of the subsection "NTPClient". Click twice by parameter "SpecialPollInterval".
  14. The parameter change window is started. "SpecialPollInterval".
  15. By default, the values are specified in the hexadecimal calculus system. With this system, the computer works well, but for a regular user it is incomprehensible. Therefore, in the block "Executive system" Translate switch to position "Decimal". After that in the field "Value" The number will appear 604800 In the decimal measurement system. This number displays the number of seconds through which the PC clock is synchronized with the server. It is easy to calculate that 604800 seconds are 7 days or 1 week.
  16. In field "Value" Parameter change windows "SpecialPollInterval" We enter the time in seconds through which we wish to synchronize the computer clock with the server. Of course, it is desirable that this interval will be less than the one that is installed by default, and not more. But this every user decides for himself. We will establish a value as an example. 86400 . Thus, the synchronization procedure will be performed 1 time per day. Zhmem. Ok.
  17. Now you can close the registry editor window. Click on the standard closing icon in the upper right corner of the window.

Thus, we set up automatic synchronization of local PC clocks with a server time with a periodicity of 1 time per day.

Method 3: Command Line

The following method for starting time synchronization implies the use of the command line. The basic condition is that before the start of the procedure you are logged in to the system under the accounting name with the administrator rights.

Synchronize the time in Windows 7, as applying third-party software and using the internal capabilities of the operating system. Moreover, this can be done in various ways. Each user simply needs to choose a more suitable option for itself. Although objectively use of third-party is more convenient than the use of built-in OS tools, but it is necessary to consider that the installation of third-party programs creates an additional load on the system (even a small), and may also be a source of vulnerabilities for attackers.

How to configure time synchronization throughout the domain right away? And so that it worked next itself? And when the domain controller with the PDC role will change, what to do? And if the time sync in the domain is configured, but it works bad, how to fix?
About this all this in this article.

A bit of theory

Synchronization of time in the domain may (theoretically) work itself, without any settings. It looks like this:

  1. Domain computers and servers synchronize their time with domain controllers (with them closest).
  2. Domain controllers synchronize their time with the domain controller to which the FSMO is assigned the PDC role (in terms of Windows 2000 - the "primary domain controller").
  3. The domain controller (CD) with the PDC role synchronizes the time with an external source.
  • If the domain controller is a virtual, the time synchronization [with host] must be turned off in the settings of the virtual machine. Otherwise (if, for example, a host with virtual machines - in the domain): the domain virtual controller will (automatically) synchronize time with the host, and the host with the nearest domain controller, i.e. With his virtual.
  • If the time synchronization is already configured (manually or via group policies), the new settings you specify can not be applied (despite the Successful message in all commands) and then you need a complete reset of time synchronization settings on problematic computers or domain controllers.

How to check if the time synchronization works in the domain?

Before the "breaking" (and during the configuration process, to check the effectiveness of the changes made), it is necessary to diagnose the current state, as well as analyze the current time service configuration. This is designed to help several teams listed below.

Team
W32TM / MONITOR.

  1. Can be performed on any computer (or controller) domain.
  2. Shows a list of all domain controllers (with which time synchronization can be synchronized).
  3. For each domain controller in the "NTP:" field displays the time difference with the PDC domain controller (which is a source for synchronizing time throughout the domain).
  4. For each domain controller in the "Refid:" field, information is displayed about the time synchronization source for this domain controller. For all domain controllers (except for the CD with the PDC role), this should be either another domain controller, or a CD with a PDC role.

Team
W32TM / QUERY / SOURCE
or
W32TM / QUERY / PEERS

  1. Shows a source to synchronize time (with which computer is synchronized by the time of the computer on which this command is running). For any computers / servers, this should be one of the domain controllers, for any domain controller (except PDC), this should be another CD (usually with the PDC role), for the CD with the PDC role, this should be an external source of time synchronization (Internet).
If the "VM IC Time Synchronization Provider" message appears in the results of execution of the command - it means that this virtual machine is synchronized with the virtualization host. If this virtual machine is one of the domain controllers, you should change this setting!

Team
W32TM / QUERY / CONFIGURATION / VERBOSE

  1. Can be performed on any computer or domain controller.
  2. Displays all Windows time settings for the current computer.
  3. Make sure that the results of the command on all computers and domain controllers (except PDC) in the TYPE field section has NT5DS. If it is not so, the synchronization settings on such computers must be corrected (as - see below).
  4. If you have Windows 2003, then you cannot execute this command. Instead, you can see the time configuration parameters in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \\ SYSTEM \\ CURRENTCONLSET \\ SERVICES \\ W32Time \\ Parameters, in particular the type parameter.

Team
W32TM / QUERY / STATUS / VERBOSE

  1. Can be performed on any computer or domain controller.
  2. Displays the synchronization status (including synchronization source, time and status of the latest synchronization) for the computer on which it is performed. The "/ Verbose" option provides more detailed information.

Team
W32TM / STRIPCHART / COMPUTER: " "/ SAMPLES: 3 / DataOnly

Compare time (and displays the difference over time) on the current computer with the computer indicated in the / Computer argument. Computer source for comparison of time can be both online and in the local domain. Examples of the team:
W32TM / STRIPCHART /COMPUTER: "NTP.ORG "/ SAMPLES: 3 / DataOnly
or
w32tm / stripchart /computer:"dc1.domain.local "/ SAMPLES: 3 / DataOnly

How to fix time synchronization settings

Setting Time Synchronization on Computers and Domain Controllers
(except for the CD with the role of PDC)

  1. Find all group policies that change the time synchronization settings and disable such policies. Through group policies, the time service is configured here: gpedit.msc => "Computer Configuration" => "Administrative templates" => "System" => "Windows Time Service" => "Time Providers". Check that time synchronization policies do not apply, for this you can execute the command:
    GPRESULT / R.
  2. Check that on all virtual machines - the domain controllers is disabled to synchronize time with virtualization hosts. To do this (in Hyper-V), you can go to the properties of the virtual machine, the integration tool section and disable time synchronization. After that configuration of the time service (on the virtual domain controller) you need to update.
  3. Update the configuration on all problematic domain controllers / controllers (except for the PDC role CD):
    W32TM / Config / SyncFromFlags: Domhier / Update
  4. Perform forced time synchronization by giving a command to re-find sources of time synchronization:
    W32TM / RESYNC / REDISCOVER
  5. If the above actions do not help, restart the time service (on problem computers)
    NET STOP W32Time
    Net Start W32Time.
    And re-follow the paragraphs 3 and 4.
  6. If the above actions did not help solve the time synchronization problem, it is necessary to re-establish the time service on problem computers (and re-setting parameters).
    NET STOP W32Time
    w32tm / unregister
    w32tm / register
    Net Start W32Time.

Time settings on the CD with the PDC role are fundamentally different from the settings on all other computers in the domain (including the remaining domain controllers). PDC is a time source in the whole domain, it is its time to be used (directly or indirectly through other domain controllers) all other computers.

  1. If the domain controller with the PDC role is a virtual machine, make sure the time synchronization with the host on which it is located is disabled in the settings of this virtual machine.
  2. Make sure that group time synchronization policies throughout the domain (if you have) do not apply to the CD with the role of PDC! This computer has a time source - on the Internet, and the type of time synchronization (unlike the entire remaining domain) is not NT5DS, but NTP!
  3. If there are doubts that the time synchronization on the CD with the PDC role is performed correctly, the easiest way to re-register and re-configure the time service.

Re-registration of time service on a domain controller with a PDC role

To cancel registration and re-log registration, follow these commands:

nET STOP W32Time
w32tm / unregister
w32tm / register
Net Start W32Time

Setting up time synchronization on a domain controller with PDC role

Our CD with the PDC role must be configured to synchronize with an external source (on the Internet). For this purpose, the type of NT5DS synchronization and synchronization is not suitable in accordance with the domain hierarchy (Domhier). Therefore, on our CD with the PDC role, we use the NTP synchronization type and synchronization will be manually configured (Manual). Synchronization sources (Peers) are indicated in quotes, and if there are several such sources, they are listed through the comma. In addition, we give an indication to consider this synchronization source (CD with a PDC role) a reliable source of time (Reliable):

w32tm / config / syncfromflags: manual /manualpeerlist:"0.pool.ntp.org, 1.pool.ntp.org, 2.pool.ntp.org "/ Reliable: YES / UPDATE
