With the release of a new operating system, traditionally, I receive tons of messages of a very different nature. Most of them, of course, concern solving various kinds of problems, but they also write relatively many questions about tuning, optimization, etc.
Today I would like to tell you with one article about basic setting and optimizing what is necessary, which I always do first of all on new system after installation (or already on the "filthy" operating system from the user). Of course, not everything will be told, but a lot, and this is what will allow you to understand how to speed up a Windows-based computer.
In general, I was going to write this material with the release of 7th, but somehow my hands did not reach a large article, and therefore there was a large cycle of small notes, each of which talked about some small aspect. Now it has been decided to correct this misunderstanding.
By the way, for several systems, in general, in terms of tuning and optimization, not much has changed, and therefore you can safely apply the following to Windows 7 and Windows 8, and use some principles on older systems.

How to speed up a computer on Windows 10 and 7/8 - interface
I will show and tell using the example of the interface and Windows systems 10, but those who wish can easily apply all this to 7 or 8, since everything is identical with rare exceptions and the problem may be only slight differences in the interface and the absence of what needs to be optimized.
Disable background programs and services
Open the Windows settings (in relation to 10-tke basically) by the start method and by clicking the corresponding icon or setting (they are the same parameters, that is, not the control panel):
There, turn into " Confidentiality -Background applications", where either disable all background applications altogether, or most of those that you do not need. Usually their work in the background is not required, but sometimes they eat up resources:

I think I’m right if I assume that he wants to get a smooth operation, optimal performance and usability from a freshly installed operating system. Of course, all these parameters are very individual, and what will be convenient for one user may seem unacceptable to another. However, I would venture to suggest that there are some Windows 10 settings that will be well received and will benefit most computer users who have reinstalled their operating system. It is for such people and above all on their own own experience I am writing this article.
So, we recently became the owners of a completely new and, incidentally, very promising operating system called " Windows 10". As stated in the official messages of Microsoft corporation, this release of "Windows" will be the last. In the sense that the software giant will no longer release new versions of Windows under any numbers (11, 12 ...) or names (like XP, Vista or Millenium). From now on, Windows 10 is a service. The operating system will constantly receive critical and small cumulative updates, and from time to time (once every six months) - major functionality updates, which, in fact, will reinstall the system, of course, while preserving all files and programs existing on the user's computer. Where am I leading all this? And besides, there is no point in waiting out Windows 10 and starting to study the next version of the operating system. You still have to master the top ten(unless, of course, you plan to switch to another system). And the sooner we do this, the better and easier it will be for us in the future. Agree better times to study everything thoroughly and bring to mind right after installation, and then enjoy uninterrupted work, rather than endlessly postponing.
Personally, I work at the computer quite a lot and from time to time I like to start from scratch, so to speak. By these words I mean a clean install of the OS... So now, before starting the setup, I reinstalled myself and I advise you to install Windows 10 cleanly. I described how to do this step by step in the article “ Clean install of Windows 10 ».
1. Install updates
So, we have the system installed. Before us is still an absolutely clean desktop and the same sterile contents. hard disk... Now what? First of all, I personally try to keep track of all necessary updates were installed as soon as possible. Among them there will certainly be critical ones - for example, drivers for various equipment... To do this, go to the tab “ Options»Menu« Start"(Image of a gear) and go to the section" Updates and security". There we check for updates and wait for their installation.
I advise you to pay attention to the tab “ Extra options"In the Update Center. Personally, I immediately put two ticks there: on the items “ At Windows update provide updates for other Microsoft products". Here, if necessary, you can postpone all updates to certain time... This may be necessary, for example, if you have an emergency at work and the delay in starting the computer due to the installation of updates is critical even for a few minutes. This setting does not affect the installation of security updates.
Also, in the update center, you can change the period of device activity - specify the time interval of the day (up to 18 hours) when the computer is most actively used. During this time, it will not reboot to install updates. I have an interval set from 8 am to 2 am. I always install updates on a laptop manually, and the hospital works with them at night - I have it turned on almost around the clock.
2. Do not touch the driver ...
While updates are being installed, I will express my humble opinion about installing and configuring drivers in Windows 10... I believe (and I have my own good reasons for this) that the “ten” itself very well selects the firewood necessary for my computer. For the sake of experiment, I tried using popular third-party programs for automatic installation drivers. They invariably found me a bunch of new driver versions and even installed them. But it ended badly more than once: either the equipment began to work slower, then it generally lost 90% of its functionality (video card). The possible reason, in my opinion, is trivial: the newest driver can be ideally compatible with 7 or 8, but for "ten" it is simply not yet sharpened. In general, in the end, I invariably had to roll back to the previous version of the driver.
The last attempt to update the drivers with a third-party program (purely out of curiosity, by the way - to see how it all ends and describe the result on the site) ended with the death of the laptop video chip :-( I cannot prove a direct relationship, but I am convinced that everything is so. I think you will draw the conclusions yourself. Personally, I am more of a driver on Windows 10 with my hands and using third-party programs do not put. I trust what the system itself chooses automatically. The most important principle of optimization works here: do not over-optimize. Why reinvent the wheel (read: looking for a way to install latest drivers), if the top ten copes with this task, if not by 5 points, then exactly by 4. Configuring drivers in Windows 10 implemented perfectly, so the chance that you have to go there is minimal.
3. Install the antivirus
While updates continue to be installed, my first and most important task is to install an antivirus. Yes, I know many people think that such a program is not needed on the top ten - they say there is a built-in Windows Defender. I am not one of them, and I expressed my opinion on this issue in detail in the article “ Do I need to install antivirus on Windows 10 ».
What antivirus program choose, everyone's personal business. Even the weakest is better than nothing. Personally, I go for the completely free 360 Total Security. At least half a billion Chinese users speak in its favor. Can you imagine how you can work out protection technologies on 500 million computers? Development is monetized exclusively on advertising in the program itself. Western companies never dreamed of this. I have a respectful attitude to the products of the Kaspersky Lab, but I regret the money for them. Recently appeared free antivirus Kaspersky has not tried it yet, although it would be worth it (I confess).
Avast, Avira and other paid antivirus programs that have limited free versions, once used and even praised. Then, over time, he concluded that they missed too much of everything suspicious and finally abandoned them. In general, while I'm holding on to the Chinese (this is now generally in trend :-). 4. Remove the password for entering Windows
A very important moment for me in Windows setup 10 on your home computer. It is very annoying when, for example, in the morning you press the "Start" button on the system, go to the shower and get coffee, come back - and instead of the already running desktop, the login screen is stuck on the monitor. 5. Install the minimum required software package
It's very strange, but even the most modern Windows 10 lacks some programs that are simply vital when using a computer. For example, an archiver. It would seem how many of them are even free. Microsoft would have agreed with their manufacturers a long time ago and implemented it into its "operating system". But ... let's think that they don't want to restrict competition in the market in this way. In general, from the necessary programs for all right after Windows installations 10 I advise you to install an archiver... 6. Set up a keyboard shortcut for switching layouts
I don’t know about you, but I’m used to my tongue switching with the combination “ Ctrl + Shift". 7. Cleaning and optimization
After all the updates and programs are installed, I carry out the initial cleaning of the computer and its optimization. If you immediately thought about special programs used for this, I want to categorically object and say that Windows 10 itself has excellent built-in tools that allow you to do all this much better and more reliably (if only because all these methods and tools were invented by the company that developed Windows). In early preview builds of Windows 10, it looked like Control Panel would continue to dominate issues fine tuning systems, but everything changed very quickly - now "Parameters" contain everything you need in 9 different sections.
